傻瓜英文堂 ENGLISH FOR DUMMIES

2008年9月下旬，國際知名歌手女神卡卡（Lady Gaga）出了一首電子流行歌曲叫Poker Face，中文直譯成「撲克臉」。這首歌曲曾在歐美轟動一時。

其實poker face也是一個英文成語，意思是「沒有表情的面孔」。不難想見，「撲克臉」當是指那種「喜怒不形於色」的人。但要注意的是，poker face的典故並非出自撲克牌上的人像，而是出自善於玩撲克牌的人。這種老手在玩牌時，臉上毫無表情，讓對手完全猜不透他手上的牌是好是壞。來看以下例句：

He always wears a poker face. I wonder what is in his mind.

（他經常面無表情，我不知道他心裡想什麼。）

說到poker face，不禁令人聯想起另一個英文成語long face。後者意思是一副「不悅的面孔」。pull( 或wear ) a long face意思就是「擺臭臉」。來看以下例句：

He pulls a long face simply because he got up on the wrong side of the bed.

（他臉臭臭的，因為情緒不佳。）

順便一提：get up on the wrong side of the bed也是個英文成語，可譯為「下床氣還未消」，也可引申為「情緒不佳」。亦作get out of the wrong side of the bed。

將poker face和long face相提並論，就學英文的人而言，應當更能增強對這兩個英文成語的記憶吧？
