這個典故出自基督教新約聖經：文士和法利賽人為了試探耶穌，就把一個不貞的女人帶到耶穌面前。他們對耶穌說，根據摩西律法，這女人該用石頭打死，問耶穌如何處置。
耶穌對他們說：He that without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.這話的意思是：「你們當中誰沒有過犯，誰就丟第一塊石頭。」因為有這麼一個故事，cast the first stone就引申為「率先發難」。例如：
We want to fight against him, but no one cast the fight stone.
( 我們想要對抗他，卻沒人率先發難。)
